Traditional Boatyard
Boatbuilding has been an activity of great importance in the Basque Country. The boatbuilding technology developed in our country was, in the past, very advanced. Our boats have had a major impact on our history.
However, our traditional boatyards have been closing down, and the craft and knowhow of wooden boat construction has all but disappeared along our coast.
In the year 2000 Albaola, in collaboration with the regional development agency Oarsaldea, created The Ontziola Centre of Research and Construction of Traditional Boats in Pasai Donibane.
In 2010 the Department of Culture of Gipuzkoa County Council created The Ondartxo Centre of Maritime Culture in Pasai San Pedro, which Albaola is in charge of. Since then, Ondartxo has housed the new Centre of Research and Construction of Traditional Boats.
Our boatbuilding work can be seen in Ondartxo, where visitors can watch us at work using traditional boatbuilding techniques.
