Traditional boatbuilding was about to disappear in the Basque Country. New materials and ways of making boats put the craft at risk and the knowledge that was acumulated during centuries was in danger.
In Albaola we consider traditional boatbuilding necessary to maintain, reinforce, and share our maritime history. That is why we work so we don't loose this art, getting the knowledge acumulated generation after generation in the last boatbuilder, retrieving old plans from dusty lofts, and keeping this craft alive that otherwise was about to disappear.
In The Factory we created a school so that students can have a professional training. Once they finish the training period they should have all the skills needed to be able to build boats, making one link more in this chain of cultural transmission.
